Ringfort (Rath), Reagrellagh, Co. Cork

A low arc of earthen bank curving through a pasture field in Reagrellagh, Co. Cork is almost all that remains of what was once a complete circular enclosure, roughly 38 metres across.

This is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, the type of enclosed farmstead that served as the basic unit of rural settlement across early medieval Ireland, typically dating from around the sixth to the tenth century. What makes this particular example quietly interesting is not what stands but what has been swallowed: the bank, never more than about a metre high even at its most intact, has been absorbed into the field fence system, so that a boundary farmers use today traces the ghost of a structure more than a thousand years old.

The enclosure appears on Ordnance Survey six-inch maps from 1842, 1903, and 1938, each time depicted as a hachured circle, indicating that surveyors across nearly a century still recognised it as a distinct feature in the landscape. By 1939, however, P. J. Hartnett was describing the rampart as very much overgrown and broken, suggesting it was already well on its way to the fragmented condition seen today. The surviving arc runs from the north-north-west around to the north-east, while aerial photography has confirmed the line of the levelled sections as a soilmark, a faint discolouration in the ground that betrays buried or destroyed earthworks to the camera even when nothing is visible at ground level. More striking still is the presence of a souterrain in the interior. A souterrain is an underground stone-lined passage or chamber, typically associated with ringforts and thought to have served for storage, refuge, or both. Its existence here suggests the original settlement was substantial enough to warrant that kind of construction.
