The 1911 Census recorded 6,624 people named Allen in Ireland, about 0.151% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 107th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 3,249 men and 3,364 women. (A small number, 11, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Allen in Ireland
Antrim had the largest share of Allens, 23.6% (1,562 people). Next came Down (744), Dublin (670), Cork (550) and Armagh (471).
Allen average age in 1911
The average Allen in 1911 was 28.9 years old, 28.6 for men and 29.3 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Allen literacy in 1911
Of the Allens whose literacy was recorded, 80% could both read and write, 3.8% could read but not write, and 16.2% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Allen common first names
The most common male names were John (389), James, William, Thomas and Robert. For women it was Mary (337), followed by Elizabeth, Margaret, Annie and Sarah.
Allen occupations in 1911
The most common entry on an Allen's census form was "Scholar"; 19.7% (1,302) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11%), textile worker (4.4%), general labourer (4.3%) and farm labourer (3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.4% of all Allens, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Allen?
The largest religious group among Allens was Roman Catholic, at 35.2%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (28.6%), Anglican (27%), Methodist (4.8%) and Unitarian (0.7%).
