Of the Atkinsons whose literacy was recorded, 81.7% could both read and write, 3.2% could read but not write, and 14.9% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.9%), textile worker (4.4%), general labourer (3.6%) and farm labourer (2.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.4% of all Atkinsons, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retail & commerce.

Most Atkinsons, 56.8%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (17.5%), Presbyterian (14.3%), Methodist (7.4%) and Baptist (0.9%).
