Men came out slightly ahead, 55.2% reading and writing against 32.8% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (13), Michael, Pat, James and Patrick. For women it was Mary (18), followed by Bridget, Maggie, Catherine and Sebina.

The most common occupation among Cattigans was farmer, 36.7% of them (51 people). Next came scholar / student (23%), farm labourer (2.2%), domestic servant (0.7%) and police (ric/dmp) (0.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 38.8% of all Cattigans, followed by domestic service, public service & defence and textiles & clothing.
