The 1911 Census recorded 2,215 people named Fagan in Ireland, about 0.051% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 397th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,114 men and 1,098 women. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Fagan in Ireland
Dublin was Fagan country: 33.8% of them (748 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Westmeath (587), Meath (271), Down (91) and Louth (81).
Fagan average age in 1911
The average Fagan in 1911 was 30.4 years old, 30.3 for men and 30.6 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Fagan literacy in 1911
Of the Fagans whose literacy was recorded, 80.1% could both read and write, 3.3% could read but not write, and 16.4% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Fagan common first names
The most common male names were John (157), Patrick, James, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (191), followed by Bridget, Catherine, Margaret and Elizabeth.
Fagan occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Fagan's census form was "Scholar"; 18.3% (405) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.5%), general labourer (6.3%), farm labourer (4.3%) and domestic servant (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.4% of all Fagans, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Fagan?
Fagans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 97.2% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (2.2%) and Presbyterian (0.1%).
