Ringfort (Rath), Tirlahode, Co. Cavan

A modern road runs straight through the middle of this ringfort in Tirlahode, County Cavan, splitting what was once a unified enclosure into two unequal pieces.

It is an oddly ordinary fate for a structure that would originally have been someone's fortified home, and it illustrates how thoroughly the Irish countryside has been reorganised around these ancient earthworks rather than in spite of them.

The site is a rath, the most common type of early medieval settlement monument in Ireland, typically consisting of a raised circular interior enclosed by one or more earthen banks and an outer ditch known as a fosse. At Tirlahode, the internal diameter measures 27.8 metres, placing it within the typical range for a single-farmstead enclosure. The earthen bank remains substantial, though the fosse has been infilled over time and partially absorbed into the surrounding field drainage system, a common form of gradual agricultural attrition. The road that now bisects the site cuts through both bank and fosse at the north-west and east-south-east, meaning the original entrance, which would have been a deliberate gap or causeway across the fosse, can no longer be identified with any confidence.

What remains is still legible as a raised, roughly circular platform in the landscape, the kind of feature that reads clearly once you know what to look for, even when a tarmac strip runs directly across it. The fosse's incorporation into field drains is worth noting; water still follows the line of that ancient boundary, even if the boundary itself has been forgotten.
