Estate Features
Gate lodges occupy a curious place in the Irish architectural landscape.
Small, often ornate, and built to announce the wealth and taste of a landed estate rather than to shelter anyone of consequence, they were the first and last impression a visitor would carry of a great house. The one at Ballymore in County Galway belongs to this tradition, a modest structure whose purpose was always as much about display as about domestic function, marking the threshold between the public road and the private world beyond the gates.
