Ringfort (Rath), Teerelton, Co. Cork

A shallow hollow in a Cork pasture might not arrest the eye, but the slightly raised circular platform at Teerelton tells a more considered story once you know what to look for.

The earthwork is nearly circular, measuring 32 metres east to west and 30 metres north to south, and it sits on an east-facing slope with its interior dipping gently inward in what surveyors describe as a saucer shape. Around it runs a scarp, the surviving remnant of a built-up bank, reaching a maximum height of 1.6 metres. A shallow external fosse, essentially a ditch dug to provide material for the bank and to define the enclosure's boundary, survives to a depth of around 0.4 metres, at least for a short distance to the north. Two breaks in the scarp, one to the east-south-east and one to the south-west, each roughly 6 metres wide, mark what were likely original entrances or later breaches.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths when defined primarily by earthen banks rather than stone, are among the most common archaeological monuments in Ireland, with estimates of their numbers running into the tens of thousands. Most date to the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to twelfth centuries, and functioned as enclosed farmsteads, the bank and fosse providing a degree of security for livestock and family alike. The Teerelton example is modest in scale and earthwork height compared to more elaborate examples, but its form is coherent and its setting on a sloped field gives it a quality of quiet deliberateness. Notably, another ringfort is visible from here on higher ground to the north-north-east, a reminder that these enclosures were rarely isolated features but part of a wider inhabited and organised landscape.
