Hut site, Reennafardarrig Island, Co. Kerry

A seven-acre island off the Kerry coast holds, at its highest and most central point, the ghost of a dwelling that has almost entirely returned to the earth.

The oval hut on Reennafardarrig, lying off the north-eastern side of Illauntannig in the Dingle Peninsula's outer waters, survives now as little more than a grass-grown ridge, its walls reduced to foundations only a few centimetres above the ground. The structure measured roughly 3.2 metres east to west and 4.9 metres north to south internally, with an entrance set into the western sector. A boulder some 2.7 metres long rests at the west-north-west side and may once have been built into the wall itself, drawn into the fabric of the building rather than simply left where it fell.

Leading away northward and south-eastward from the hut towards the shoreline are the remnants of field walls, now reduced to discontinuous lines of upright slabs standing apart from one another like the surviving teeth of a comb. Together, the hut and its associated field system suggest a small agricultural presence on the island at some point, though the record does not pin down a precise date. More intriguing still is a detail recorded by the Co. Kerry Field Club in 1942: a sandstone boulder on the island was noted to bear a small incised cross and other linear markings. Whether the cross was the work of an early Christian hermit using the island as a place of retreat, or something cut at a later period, remains open, and the boulder itself could not be relocated during subsequent survey work described by J. Cuppage in the 1986 Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. The markings, if they survive at all, are somewhere on the island still.
