The boundary it bisects is not a simple field wall but a carefully engineered perimeter roughly 120 metres north to south and 113 metres east to west, large enough to have functioned as a self-contained ecclesiastical settlement. Inside it sit Kilranelagh Church and its graveyard, a holy well dedicated to St. Bridget, and two stone crosses, the full complement of features associated with an early Irish monastic or devotional site.

Ecclesiastical enclosures of this kind were the organising principle of early Christian settlement in Ireland, defining a sacred precinct that set religious life apart from the surrounding landscape, much as a monastic wall would in continental Europe. What makes the boundary here particularly interesting is that it was not built uniformly. The northern to south-eastern arc is an earthen bank up to two metres wide, faced with stone on both its inner and outer surfaces. Moving round to the south-west, the bank narrows slightly and the stone cladding shifts to the exterior face only. Then, from the south-west back to the north, the boundary changes character entirely, becoming a drystone wall just 0.6 metres wide, its outer face standing noticeably higher than its inner. The variation suggests either a phased construction history or a practical response to the slope and the available materials at each point along the perimeter, though the historical record does not settle the question.
