Enclosure, Ballyknock, Co. Tipperary

At Ballyknock in County Tipperary, a low earthen enclosure sits in a quietly complicated relationship with its immediate neighbours.

Rather than standing alone, it is joined to a second enclosure to its east by a shared fosse, a term for a defensive or boundary ditch, making the two structures something closer to a conjoined pair than independent monuments. That shared fosse is substantial, measuring roughly 4.7 metres across and 1.7 metres deep, with a small stream running along it from the hillside to the south-east. The arrangement suggests a deliberate, planned landscape rather than anything accidental or piecemeal.

The enclosure itself is roughly rectangular, measuring approximately 18 metres east to west and 14 metres north to south, defined by a linear bank that has in many places been reduced to a scarp, a low, sloping edge rather than a proper upstanding bank. At its best-preserved points, along the eastern, southern, and western sides, the scarp reaches a maximum height of around 1.15 metres. The northern side has fared worse; it is low and heavily eroded, the corners at the north-west and south-west softened and rounded, most likely by water running down from the hillside over a long period. The interior slopes downward toward the north-west, following the natural gradient of the ground, and much of it is obscured by overgrowth. A further enclosure lies only about 10 metres to the west-south-west, and a linear earthen field boundary runs roughly 4 metres to the south. The ground between the monuments is poorly drained, marked by a small water channel carrying hillside run-off downslope. What that clustering of enclosures, ditches, and boundaries once organised, whether farmstead, grazing, or something else entirely, is not recorded, but the grouping implies that whoever shaped this corner of Tipperary did so with some intention of permanence.
