Hut site, Teeromoyle, Co. Kerry

On a slight rise at Teeromoyle, on the Iveragh Peninsula in south Kerry, sit the remains of two circular stone huts that have been slowly returning to the ground for an unknown length of time.

The better-preserved of the two is still recognisable as a structure, roughly oval in plan at about 4.9 metres by 3 metres, with walls surviving to around 0.7 metres in height and still nearly 1.4 metres thick at the base. Immediately downslope, two small stone-filled depressions break the ground, and a heap of rubble lies to the east. A second, smaller hut to the northwest has fared worse, now little more than a low mound of collapsed stone, about 3 metres across and half a metre high.

Circular stone huts of this kind are found throughout the uplands and coastal margins of Kerry and were used across a long span of Irish prehistory and early medieval life, sometimes as permanent dwellings, sometimes as seasonal shelters for those moving livestock to higher grazing. The walls of the main hut at Teeromoyle are thick enough to suggest a reasonably substantial and deliberate construction, not a hasty field shelter. The proximity of the two structures, and the depressions nearby, hint at a small cluster of activity on this rise, though without excavation it is impossible to say whether they were in use at the same time or represent different phases of occupation entirely. A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan, who surveyed the Iveragh Peninsula and published their findings through Cork University Press in 1996, recorded the site as part of a wider effort to document the extraordinary density of ancient remains across this corner of Munster.
