Megalithic structure, Gearhanagoul, Co. Kerry

On a south-facing slope in Gearhanagoul, above the Coomeelan stream in south-west Kerry, a large sandstone boulder sits raised off the ground on a cluster of smaller support-stones.

The arrangement is the kind of thing that catches the eye without immediately explaining itself: a flat-topped slab measuring 3.3 metres by 1.6 metres, lifted roughly half a metre above the earth, its western edge swallowed by a rising bank of peat. The whole thing has the quiet, unresolved quality of a structure that has outlasted any certain understanding of its purpose.

The mechanics of its construction are quietly impressive. Where the ground slopes downward toward the south-east, the builders compensated by stacking three stones on top of one another beneath that corner, effectively levelling the capstone against the pull of the terrain. Structures of this general type, sometimes called dolmens or portal tombs depending on their precise form, were erected during the Neolithic and early Bronze Age periods, and were associated variously with burial, ritual, and the marking of landscape. What makes the Gearhanagoul example particularly interesting is its immediate context. Within a short radius, the surrounding rough pasture holds at least three enclosures and a fulacht fia, a type of prehistoric cooking site typically identified by a mound of heat-shattered stone beside a trough or pit, where water was boiled using fire-heated rocks. One such fulacht fia lies about 30 metres to the south. The clustering of these features suggests this slope was a focus of activity across a considerable stretch of prehistory, not a single monument standing in isolation but part of a wider, now barely legible, inhabited landscape.
