Moanbane Fort, Moanvane, Co. Roscommon

Nobody built a fort here and then forgot to put a door in, yet that is precisely what survives on the crest of a north-east-facing slope at the eastern edge of a broad plateau in County Roscommon.

No original entrance has ever been identified at this earthwork, which is either a puzzling gap in the archaeological record or a sign that whatever served as a threshold has long since been erased. The structure itself is a ringfort, a type of enclosed farmstead common across early medieval Ireland, typically consisting of a raised interior surrounded by one or more earthen banks and ditches. Here the arrangement runs to a roughly circular grass-covered interior about thirty-four metres across, ringed by an earthen bank and a hedge, then separated from a further outer bank by a rounded fosse, the fosse being the ditch dug to create and reinforce the banks on either side of it.

The dimensions are precise enough to suggest this was once a well-constructed example of its type. The inner bank measures between four and a half and nearly six metres wide, the fosse between five and nearly seven metres across at the top and tapering to two and a half to four metres at its base, with a depth of up to one and a half metres. The outer bank is lower and narrower. In its full extent, the monument measures roughly fifty-nine metres east to west and just over fifty-three metres north to south. That completeness, however, is compromised. Quarrying has damaged the inner bank and fosse along the north-west to east-north-east arc, and a north-to-south field wall cuts straight across the interior, dividing it in a way that would have baffled its original occupants. These are the ordinary indignities that centuries of agricultural use visit on monuments of this kind, gradual encroachments that slowly rewrite the original geometry without quite erasing it.
