Promontory fort – coastal, Croaghross, Co. Donegal

Along the rugged coastline of County Donegal, the promontory fort at Croaghross stands as a testament to Ireland's ancient coastal defences.

These clifftop fortifications, built by communities who understood the strategic value of naturally defended positions, were once common throughout Ireland's Atlantic seaboard. The Croaghross fort occupies a narrow finger of land jutting into the sea, where steep cliffs provided natural protection on three sides whilst defensive earthworks secured the landward approach.
