Ringfort (Rath), Carhoo, Co. Cork

A ring of earth survives in a tillage field on a south-facing slope at Carhoo, Co. Cork, its interior long since turned over by the plough.

That it survives at all is quietly remarkable. Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, were enclosed farmsteads of the early medieval period, typically dating from roughly the fifth to the twelfth century. Thousands once dotted the Irish countryside; many have been levelled by centuries of agriculture, and those that remain in actively worked land are often the most diminished.

This particular example is roughly circular, measuring 35 metres north to south and 34.3 metres east to west, which puts it comfortably within the typical size range for a single-family enclosure. An earthen bank, standing to about 1.2 metres in height, runs from the south-east around to the north-north-east; elsewhere the boundary survives as a scarp, a simple cut or slope in the ground rather than a raised bank. Outside the bank, from the north-west to the north-north-east, there is an external fosse, that is, a ditch, still reaching roughly 0.8 metres in depth. A gap two metres wide in the north-western stretch of the bank likely marks the original entrance. The fact that measurements this precise can still be taken speaks to the earthwork's resilience, even as the ground inside has been repeatedly disturbed by cultivation.

The site sits on a south-facing slope, an orientation that would have been a practical choice for any early medieval farming household, offering shelter, drainage, and the best available light. The ploughed interior means that whatever traces of post-holes, hearths, or souterrains, the underground stone-lined passages sometimes found within raths, once lay inside are likely gone or badly disturbed. What remains above ground is essentially the skeleton of the enclosure, enough to read the form and the intention, if not the life that was once contained within it.
