And yet the absence is itself the story. A rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, was typically a circular earthen enclosure used as a farmstead during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. They are among the most common archaeological monument types in Ireland, numbering in the tens of thousands, and their gradual disappearance from the landscape over centuries of agricultural clearance is a quiet, unremarked kind of loss.

The Ordnance Survey's six-inch map of 1842 recorded this particular example as a semicircular enclosure, approximately thirty-five metres across on its north-south axis, with a field fence running north to south along its western edge. That fence line may well have contributed to the monument's eventual destruction, as the boundary of a working farm and the curve of an ancient enclosure do not always sit comfortably together over generations of land use. By the time anyone looked closely enough to document it in detail, the rath had already been levelled, leaving only a spread of stone at the surface and no other trace of its former shape or function.

For anyone visiting the area, there is little to see in a conventional sense. The spread of stone would be easy to walk past without a second glance. What makes the spot worth pausing over is the 1842 map itself, which preserves the ghost of the enclosure with the particular clarity that early Ordnance Survey cartographers brought to recording features that were already, even then, beginning to disappear.
