Ringfort (Rath), Laharan, Co. Cork

Tucked against the southern edge of a working farmyard at the base of Bailocke Mountain, this ringfort carries a quiet discrepancy at its core.

When the archaeologist Bowman recorded the site in 1934, he described it as a double-ramparted fort, noting that roughly half of the outer circuit had already been levelled. What survives today is a single enclosure, its second ring largely absorbed into the surrounding landscape, leaving a monument that is simultaneously well-preserved and quietly diminished.

A rath, as ringforts of this earthen type are generally known, is an enclosed farmstead of the early medieval period, typically dating to somewhere between the sixth and tenth centuries. Most were built to protect a household and its livestock rather than to serve any serious military function. The one at Laharan is roughly circular, about 28 metres across, and enclosed by an earthen bank that still stands nearly two metres high on its interior face. The outer face is considerably lower, and an external fosse, a defensive ditch, survives to a depth of around 1.6 metres along the southern and western sides. Notably, the upper portion of the inner face of the northern bank is stone-faced, a detail that suggests some structural reinforcement at some point in the site's life. Beneath the surface, in the western half of the interior, lies a souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage of the kind often used in early medieval Ireland for storage or as a place of refuge. A drainage cut through the northern interior has disturbed parts of the bank, and the interior itself is now heavily overgrown with trees and briars, which makes the stonework and the full extent of the earthworks harder to read from within.
