Ringfort (Rath), Lyrath, Co. Kilkenny

At the south-eastern edge of the Lyrath demesne in County Kilkenny, a circular earthwork sits on a gentle rise, its banks still legible in the landscape after more than a thousand years.

What makes it quietly odd is the asymmetry: one side of the enclosure has been partially removed at some point, with an inner bank constructed in its place as a kind of repair or substitute. On the opposite side, the surviving banks are more substantial and the surrounding trench runs noticeably deeper, giving the whole structure an uneven, patched quality that rewards close attention. A ringfort, or rath, is an enclosed farmstead of the early medieval period, typically defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches thrown up around a domestic settlement. Most are roughly circular, and this one follows that pattern, measuring approximately 50 metres across.

Writing in 1905, the historian William Carrigan described it as well preserved and noted that the castle of Rathardmore stood immediately to its east. That castle survives about 95 metres to the east today, making the two monuments near neighbours across several centuries of occupation. A later observer, Doyle, recorded in 1981 that the north-east-facing entrance was still identifiable, and that a pond once lay close by. The first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1839 adds another layer: the rath appears at the edge of the demesne with a short avenue, roughly 80 metres long, running north-east to south-west from the townland boundary to the eastern side of the fort, suggesting it had been incorporated into the designed landscape of the estate rather than simply left alone. Aerial survey has since revealed cropmarks of two rectilinear enclosures and a trackway immediately to the north-west, hinting at further activity in the surrounding ground that is invisible at surface level.
