Somerset House, Somerset, Co. Galway

There is something quietly telling about a house in the west of Ireland named Somerset, carrying the weight of an English county in a landscape that could hardly be further from it.

Somerset House in County Galway belongs to a category of Irish country houses whose names speak plainly of the planter and landlord tradition, buildings that announced their owners' origins and aspirations in the very syllables of their address. Without that name, such a house might pass unnoticed in the wider countryside, one more Georgian or Victorian pile in varying degrees of repair or ruin.

Unfortunately, the surviving record for this particular house is sparse enough that the specific dates of its construction, the family who built it, and the full arc of its history remain unclear from available sources. What can be said is that it sits within a broader landscape of County Galway estate houses, a county whose history of land ownership, dispossession, and the eventual decline of the Anglo-Irish ascendancy played out with particular intensity. Many such houses were abandoned, burned, or simply allowed to fall into decay during the revolutionary period and its aftermath in the early twentieth century, while others survived into private or institutional use. The name Somerset, borrowed from the English west country, was a common enough gesture among landowning families who wished to root themselves symbolically in a tradition that stretched back across the Irish Sea.
