Water mill, Tullow, Co. Tipperary

On the eastern bank of the Mulkear River in County Tipperary, there is a site that had already been forgotten for centuries before anyone thought to write it down.

When the Civil Survey recorded the landscape of Ireland between 1654 and 1656, the compilers noted nothing more than "the ruins of a water mill" at this location. By that point, the structure had already ceased to function, its working life complete and its fabric collapsing. Whatever ground it once occupied, it left no trace that survives today.

The mill appears again, labelled simply "Old Mill", on the first edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map, which was produced in the 1830s and 1840s and offers one of the most detailed early records of the Irish landscape. That a site already described as ruinous in the mid-seventeenth century was still being marked on a map nearly two hundred years later suggests it retained some local memory or physical presence into the nineteenth century, even if only as a name attached to a feature on the riverbank. Water mills of this kind were typically built to harness the flow of a river through a millrace, a channel that directed water onto a wheel to grind grain, and were among the most economically significant structures in any rural community. The Mulkear, which drains much of north Tipperary before joining the Shannon, would have offered a reliable source of power.

Nothing is now visible on the ground. The site survives only in the cartographic and documentary record, a place that exists more in historical paperwork than in the landscape itself.
