Ringfort (Cashel), Caherkeegane, Co. Cork

A low circular wall sits in a field in Mid Cork, its stones still holding their shape after more than a thousand years of Irish weather and grazing livestock.

The site is a cashel, the term used for a ringfort built from stone rather than the earthen banks more commonly seen across the country. Ringforts served as enclosed farmsteads during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, providing a degree of security and a defined boundary for a family's dwelling and animals. This one is modest in scale, a roughly circular enclosure measuring about 22 metres north to south and 24 metres east to west, with a wall that still stands a metre high on the interior face and rises to around 1.8 metres on the exterior. The wall itself is a substantial five metres thick at its base, which speaks to the effort once invested in its construction.

The cashel sits on a south-east-facing slope, currently in use as pasture, and has been absorbed quietly into the working landscape in the way that many such monuments have across Cork and Munster more broadly. A field fence now runs along the top of the old wall, a practical addition that has, perhaps inadvertently, helped preserve the structure beneath it. The place name Caherkeegane carries echoes of its own history: the element caher, or cathair in Irish, is itself a word for a stone fort, suggesting the site was recognised and named long before any modern survey came to record it.
