Ringfort (Rath), Foildarragh, Co. Tipperary

What survives of this early medieval enclosure at Foildarragh is, in a sense, more visible from the air than from the ground.

The site was identified not by fieldwork but through an aerial photograph, which caught what ground-level observation had largely lost: a roughly circular earthwork, around 63 metres north to south and 55 metres east to west, sitting in the flat ground between two rivers. A rath, as this type of ringfort is also known, was typically a enclosed farmstead of the early medieval period, its raised interior ringed by an earthen bank and a fosse, or ditch, that together marked the boundary of a family's domestic space. Here, that fosse, between four and a half and six metres wide, still betrays itself as a band of noticeably lush grass growth, the deeper, moister soil feeding a greener sward above the buried hollow.

The setting, cradled between the Aughraria River to the south and the Bilboa River to the north, would have made practical sense to whoever established the settlement. River valleys offered fertile ground, water, and natural orientation in a landscape otherwise undifferentiated. But the centuries since have not been kind to the physical fabric of the site. Field boundaries that once cut across the western sector and ran along the northern edge have been removed, the field reclaimed and levelled. A deep drainage ditch now skirts the southern limit, blurring what little definition remains on that side. What was once a substantial enclosure, large even by the standards of Irish ringforts, has been reduced to something readable mainly as a subtle variation in the colour and texture of grass on a quiet agricultural field.
