Cairn, Barnacahoge, Co. Mayo

In the pastureland of Barnacahoge, on a ridge in County Mayo, there is a prehistoric cairn, at least on paper.

A cairn is typically a mound of stones raised over a burial or used as a landscape marker, and they appear across Ireland in considerable numbers. This one, however, has the peculiar distinction of existing almost entirely as an administrative fact. There is no visible trace of it at ground level.
